FAQ’s & Tips

How deep should I sample the soil?

We generally recommend a depth of 12 inches from the surface for most conditions.  We do not recommend removing the surface organic material prior to sample collection.

For golf courses and turf, a 6 inch sample depth may be more appropriate.

For deeply rooted crops such as corn, wheat, canola, or alfalfa, it is suggested that the sampling depth be increased to 2 or 3 feet with separate samples collected and composited for each 12-inch increment.

What does my soil test report mean?

Be sure to check the recommendation box on the Soil Test Request Form and write in the crop you are growing, e.g. lawn, corn, flower bed, garden.  The report will then include an interpretation guide indicating what the relative levels of the various nutrients and a recommendation for needed nutrients or amendments.
